Safe scissor lift operation begins before the machine moves. This guide covers the essential safety checks and procedures that every operator should follow.
Pre-Use Inspection (Daily)
Before each use, inspect the following:
- Battery/fuel level — electric models should be at minimum 20% charge before starting work
- Tyre condition — check for cuts, flat spots, or excessive wear
- Hydraulic fluid — check reservoir level and inspect for leaks under the machine
- Platform guardrails — all rails must be in position and locked; mid-rails and toe boards in place
- Emergency lowering — test the manual emergency lowering function before elevated use
- Controls — verify that platform controls and ground controls both respond correctly
- Overload indicator — set to zero and test if the machine has a load sensor
If any fault is found, do not use the machine. Contact SkyServices immediately for a replacement or repair.
Load Limits
Never exceed the rated platform capacity. The capacity shown on the machine's data plate includes everything on the platform: people, tools, and materials. For a 230kg capacity machine, this typically means one person (80–90kg) plus tools.
Do not use the platform edge as a step to gain extra reach. This is a leading cause of falls and can tip the machine on slopes.
Ground Conditions
Scissor lifts require firm, level ground. Before raising the platform:
- Check the ground bearing capacity — soft ground can cause the machine to sink or tip
- Ensure the slope is within the machine's rated gradeability (typically 3–5° maximum when elevated)
- On outdoor sites, check for underground services (pipes, cables) that could collapse under the machine's weight
Wind and Weather
Electric scissor lifts should not be used in wind speeds above 12.5 m/s (Beaufort Force 6). Diesel outdoor models have higher wind ratings — check the machine's operator manual.
Emergency Procedures
If the platform becomes stuck elevated: use the emergency lowering valve (location marked on the machine). If the machine tips: do not jump from the platform — stay inside the guardrails and call for assistance.
